Brief Description As part of the Digital Transformation of Healthcare, the Ministry of Health considered it necessary to develop a comprehensive programme for leveraging digital technologies to address cancer. This decision was driven by:
  • the high incidence of cancer, which makes it one of the leading causes of death among the Greek population;
  • significant advances in its diagnosis and treatment, which offer the prospect of improved quality of life for patients, prolonged survival and, in some cases, a cure;
  • alignment with the priorities of the European Union, which is developing significant initiatives to address cancer at both policy and technological levels, with particular emphasis on the use of data.
The objectives of the programme are summarized as follows:
  • Improving the care provided to patients through the capabilities offered by digital technology for the collection and availability of all information relating to the patient, strengthening interdisciplinary communication and collaboration, supporting decision-making, etc.
  • Supporting patients through the use of digital applications that facilitate the management of their disease.
  • Improving the efficiency of the healthcare system through the implementation of standardized processes, the application of therapeutic protocols, as well as the monitoring and evaluation of healthcare providers.
  • Collecting high-quality data that can be utilized both for policymaking and scientific research at national and European level.
The Digital Cancer Management Programme forms part of the Digital Transformation of Healthcare and is closely linked to all other actions undertaken within this framework. Consequently, it is intended to contribute to and leverage all key infrastructures that will be developed in parallel. Specifically:
  • It will extend the National Healthcare Interoperability Framework with new use cases.
  • It will leverage the Central Coding Service for the management of the coding systems and terminologies required for its operation.
  • It will operate in conjunction with the National Digital Health Record, enriching its core dataset with specific information relating to the particular disease.
