Brief Description |
This project concerns the design and implementation of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) at national level. Through this application, healthcare professionals and citizens will be provided with comprehensive access to patients’ medical data.
An Electronic Health Record (EHR) is a systematic collection of a citizen’s health information, medical history and health status, electronically stored in digital format. Records are shared through network-connected information systems or other networks and information exchange infrastructures. In addition, an EHR may provide administrative, financial and statistical information, as well as information for quality control purposes.
Electronic Health Records (EHRs) may include a wide range of data, including demographic information, medical history, medications and allergies, vaccination records, laboratory test results, radiological images, vital signs, personal statistics such as age and weight, and billing information.
It retrieves patient data from individual data sources across the healthcare system, including EOPYY, Primary Health Care (PHC), Electronic Prescription, Hospitals, Diagnostic Centers, private physicians, private healthcare units, the Central Medical Examination Repository, the Central Medical Imaging Repository, patient registries, etc.
The main objectives of the Electronic Health Record in Greece are summarized as follows:
Objectives for the healthcare community:
- Healthcare professionals will be able to record information related to the patient’s hospitalization, such as clinical symptoms, examinations and results, diagnoses and therapeutic interventions, thereby updating the patient’s health record.
- The use of new technologies will enable faster and more immediate access to information by physicians and nurses, thereby contributing to the reduction of diagnosis and hospitalization times.
- Medical and nursing data will be stored accurately and securely, effectively reducing the occurrence of “lost test results” and contributing to the elimination of paper-based hospital records and the administrative burden associated with their management.
- To support prescribing activities and clinical decision-making, both at the time of prescribing and retrospectively.
- To enable the extraction of insights concerning individual patients, the population as a whole, or any specific population segment.
- To enable healthcare professionals in other countries to access this information, either directly or indirectly.
- To actively involve healthcare professionals through their participation in the clinical systems they will use.
- To provide access to anonymized data for statistical and research purposes.
Objectives for citizens
- Patients will have access to their own health data.
- They will be able to grant access to any physician of their choice.
- They will be able to enter measurements, information and data that will ultimately become part of the citizen’s holistic health record.
Technological objectives
- A health record based on internationally recognized clinical models, archetypes and templates, ensuring that data remains longitudinally available and accessible over time.
- To be based on openEHR technology, fully compliant with European and international standards.
- Ability to integrate with any third-party systems.
- Reduction of development time, including application delivery time and the time required to incorporate new fields into existing forms.
- Reduction of maintenance costs.
- Reduction of costs associated with data transformation and validation.
